Chicken Coop Maintenance

I’m sure anyone who keeps Chickens will be experiencing great slushes of Mud on the outside of the Coop and not far off the same inside due to Chickens not being of a nature to wipe their feet first! With the weather now starting to change a bit, it’s a great time to get up there and carry out general maintenance around all areas plus a good cleaning of the Coop.

If the Run is muddy or damp, chances are there’s a fair few worms underneath so dig it over bit by bit and they’ll enjoy the odd treat and scrape around.

With Foxes now giving birth to their Cubs it won’t be long before they’re out on their training sessions and hunting more as a pack, so time spent looking for any weak areas caused by the weather or general wear and tear is beneficial…..and crucial.

With the sun rising a lot earlier, your Chickens can get quite hot being shut in their Coop waiting for poor old you to go up in your Jim-Jams. One answer to this is to install an ‘Automatic Chicken Door Opener’. Wells Poultry do a very good range of these, you may consider using your Discount Voucher to purchase one (what a plug!). The Vegetable Garden awaits!

Awaits the weather to brighten up that is! After digging over my Garden on a nice day some four weeks ago, the recent rain and cold has left the ground much to be desired.

To counter this I have done something quite simple (Experienced Gardeners will probably not agree with this!) – I’ve got all my Gardening Books and Notes out and mentally changed everything to do with March into April! I may be a month behind, but most Vegetable have a quite a number of weeks in which to sow seeds, just see it as a late start, don’t lose heart and talk to them a lot!

Sunny Clucker and Titchy, the Forum Mascots

This Saturday will see me venturing up to Scotland to take the twosome on their final journey to John O’Groats. The mileage they’ve clocked between them up since leaving Land’s End certainly goes into the thousands; loads of visits to Members throughout the UK and Titchy travelling to far off lands such as France, Canada, India, Australia and New Zealand.

So the John O’Groats photo will be taken next week.

I should add I’m doing the easy bit, Forum Members Annie, Benny and Jannie have championed the logistics the whole way through, so many thanks to them.

My Office is an 8′x6′ converted Shed and after a bit of DIY does the job perfectly (a good hideaway as well!). Best Location To Build A Chicken House

There are a number of benefits that you can get if you build a chicken house. You will have your own source of fresh eggs and edible meat, you save a lot of money, and you have the assurance that what you are consuming is free from diseases and illnesses. In addition, you also have a business that will surely earn. Hens lay eggs about a hundred times a year and an average person consumes about 200 eggs a year. Therefore, you are sure to break even or earn with selling the eggs from just two hens. If you do the math, you know that you will earn a lot!

Keep in mind that chicken must not have exposure to these kinds of stresses, as this would greatly affect their ability to lay eggs. Build the coop that has enough shade and walls to block strong winds.

Chicken House Plans – Build a Comfortable Chicken Coop

Constructing a comfortable chicken coop for your chicken entails paying close attention to the details in the building plans. Indeed constructing a chicken coop without adequate plans is a complete waste of money, time, building tools and materials. In your chicken house plans, make provision for the comfort of the chicken.

Make sure that you provide them with a spacious place to live in if you want them to be healthy. The least amount of space required for every chicken in a coop is about four square feet. Therefore, make out the number of chicken you plan to raise before constructing the chicken coop. Chicken house plans have never been that easy. It is quite easy to determine that for 30 chickens for instance you would need to build at least 120 square feet of chicken coop. It would not be bad if you are able to build more than the required space. The more space they have the more they are able to enjoy and produce better eggs. Never try to beat down cost by limiting the space allotted to each chicken. It could eventually work against you.

Again, in your chicken house plans, do not give room for the overcrowding of chicken. It rather leads to negative effects like diseases, pests and cannibalism. If your chickens do not get enough air then they would be exposed to all kinds of sicknesses and diseases. They could be very weak and die eventually. Construct a perch for your chicken. It would be very filthy to see chicken droppings mix up with the eggs. Ensure that you have boxes or any other type of containers under the perch to collect the droppings that come through. Similarly you could you could use broom handles to provide them a comfortable place to perch. It helps to keep the perch free from diseases.

Also your chicken coop should be well ventilated to prevent the chickens from sweating. Sweat promotes the development of diseases and ailments on the skin. Supply your chicken coop with small vents or windows to allow the sweat to evaporate. Indeed the best position for a window is one that does not face the direction of the wind. This position keeps stale air out and rather brings in fresher air.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances you should have a maximum of six chickens per nesting box. As much as possible the nesting boxes should be dark. This makes the chicken feel comfortable and relaxed. To prevent the eggs from cracks you could place straw shavings in the nesting boxes.

If you know how to design chicken house plans remember that the chicken coops should be strong to inhibit intruders. The wood used should be sturdy enough. Push your chicken after construction to see if it is really strong. If it shakes then you have not applied all the principles of how to design chicken house plans.

Tips For Your Plans For Your Chicken House

Congratulation on deciding to start a chicken flock! I assure you its one of the best decisions someone can ever make. Chickens are multitask animals that are also very low maintenance in comparison to how profitable they are. I have found that home owned chickens make more far more delicious eggs then the chickens owned by the big corporations. There are more advantages then just having cheaper and more delicious eggs their manure makes incredible fertiliser for any backyard garden your working on. Plus they eat just about anything (and I mean anything). However in order to get these benefits and start a successful flock your going to need a chicken coop. Here are some tips to keep in mind when making your plans for chicken house.

First I think its important not to buy a chicken house. Their are a lot of reasons including buying one is far more expensive plus the delivery takes weeks. But when you build one it will reduce the cost by at least 50% and you can finish it over a weekend (especially if you have some help). Not only that but when you buy a chicken coop they don’t even come pre-made so really your just buying the same supplies for more money.

Before you get to work you have to decide a few things and know a little bit about the area you live. Do you want a small flock? What kind of chicken do you want? How is the weather in your area? What is the average temperature? What kind of predators do you have? What do you want from you chickens? The type of chicken you want to get should be influenced by if you want a meat chicken a show chicken or a layer chicken. Also it should be influenced by the local weather. If you live in a place that is really cold in the winter you might want to get a meatier chicken breed.

The type of chicken house that you get depends on how many chickens you are going to get and by local predators. If you live in a place that has a lot of predators then you should get a sturdier chicken coop. If you only have a few (or live in a urban environment) then you can probably even get a portable chicken coop. A portable chicken coop is basically just a chicken coop that has wheels.

If you are going to have a stationary chicken coop then where you put the chicken house is a very important decision. Chickens want to live in dry locations. So unless you live in the desert then you want to put the coop somewhere where rain puddles don’t gather. Often some landscaping will be required. You should also try to put the chicken coop far away from your house mostly for the smell.

Every chicken coop needs certain facilities for chickens to sleep eat and lay their eggs. Your feeder and waterer can be either outside or inside.
