5 Tips For Building A Chicken House

Now that you have decided to start building chicken houses you need to keep in some core tips. A lot of people just dive into the project without thinking it through. So they end up neglecting a lot of key points of building a chicken house and end up having less happy chickens and their for less eggs.

1. What Kind of Chicken?

Before you start building your house you need to know what kinds of chicken you want in your flock. The reason why this is important is because each kind of chicken is more or less susceptible to changing temperature. Also depending on what kind of chickens you’re getting you will need extra or less space per chicken.

2. How Many Chickens?

Now that you know what type of chicken you want you need to figure out how many of them you want. If your going to get a huge flock of 30 or more chickens then your going to need a big house. But if you only want a simpler flock such as 3 or 2 then you can have a smaller house with less nesting box’s.

3. Climate?

The next step is to know the climate of the local area. Do you live in a very wet place? Do you get a lot of rain? Whats the average temperature in winter? Whats the average temperature in summer? Depending on these factors you should get different materials and these factors also should influence what type of chickens you want. If its colder where you live then you should get bigger birds. If you get rain a lot then you should place your house on high ground and where mud puddles don’t form.

4. Portable or Permanent?

The next step is to figure out if you want a portable or a permanent chicken house. A lot of people like to be able to transport their chickens around their yard or field. However if you are getting a bigger flock you will probably need to get a permanent chicken house. Also permanent chicken houses are usually better at protecting your flock from predators.

5. Price?

The final step is to figure out how much you are willing to spend on your backyard project. If you have plenty of money then feel free to buy the best materials from the hardware store (but never buy treated wood). However if you have a tighter budget then don’t be shy to ask your neighbors if they have spare wood around. They are usually more then happy to give you some spare wood.

Chicken House Plans – Do You Need Them

Having just finished my first chicken house but i can tell you that it was a very rewarding experience. And it was all down to the excellent chicken house plans that i had.

Firstly I had no experience as to how many thing to think about that there are to think about, but luckily i found a superb ebook for the chicken house plans.

Bear in mind that there is a multitude of plans out there and you should not plump for one that does not not cover all the issues. The number of items to consider about for your chickens such as the type of coops and the size of coop is a lot more than you’d think at first.

Ensure Your Chickens’ Safety

Your coop need to to be protected from the elements and from animals like foxes – remember that happy chickens lay more and better quality eggs. Don’t make the mistake & forget that humans can steal chickens as well, so some basic security against that would also be useful.

Bear in mind that you need to clean the coop out often as the you do not want your chickens getting filthy and easily diseased, so good chicken house plans will incorporate accessibility for humans as well as chickens. Also you need to know how to sanitise the chicken house and how often, with what type of products.

Have you thought about the type of timber and how much of it you’ll be using? How to treat the timber against the weather before starting to build with it? What type of chicken wire and rood materials you’ll need? What type of insulation to use to keep the chickens safe during colder times of the year? How to furnish the interior? What type of dried grass they like to have around them inside?

An important side issue is that chicken house plans should show you where to locate and construct the house so that the air can run through it, giving the chickens fresh air and stopping bad smells as well as reducing diseases as much as possible?

Initial thought are, do you know how many chickens you’re aiming for? That will obviously affect how big the coop is and whether it can be extended to a large size at a later date. You want chickens to have room to move and be destressed, so they nest more eggs! There is a normal number of chickens to start with but everyone has different needs.

Nesting Boxes

Most people have an idea what a chicken home looks like from the outside, but do you know what is happening inside? How many know what a nesting box even is & how it should be put together? These are key to getting eggs and essential information in chicken house plans.

There is loads of information around about building you own chicken coop, but if you want a full set of answers i recommend you read about my experience with chicken house plans.
