Keeping Chickens for Fun and Profit
Keeping chickens can be both fun and profitable. From beautiful exotic types to the old fashioned barnyard breeds, pet chickens come in many colors, textures, sizes, and temperaments.
Are You Urban or Country?
Did you know that you can have pet chickens and even fresh eggs without a noisy rooster that wakes up your neighbors? Once a hen is mature she will produce eggs. No rooster is necessary unless you want fertile eggs that will hatch out baby chicks.
Hens are not noisy unless they are being bothered by a predator. Only the roosters crow. So hens can be kept in some towns and many city areas. If you are located inside city limits, just be sure to know your local ordinances.
Space Considerations
When planning your chicken housing area, you will need to decide how many chickens you plan to home, and the size chickens you plan to keep. You can choose Jersey Giants, which are big, fluffy 10 plus pounds at adulthood, or tiny 3 pound bantams. Several standard chicken breeds can be found in a bantam size. It’s like the difference between a Great Dane and a Chihuahua.
Of course a bantam size chicken takes less space for housing and exercise, but they are not as hearty in cold climates, and must have secure protection from the elements. Even a standard or large size chicken will not do well alone in very cold weather. You must provide them with warmth and a dry coop in wet weather.
Protection from Predators
All chickens need a place they can “roost” after sunset. Off the ground and in an enclosure is best. If your home is in town you may never see a raccoon, possum, or skunk – until you have chickens. These wild creatures love chicken and they don’t mind pulling pieces of a live one through gaps in a fence, or digging under to get to the intended victim.
Cover the top of your chicken coop, even the run or exercise area. There are predatory birds, such as Hawks, that will remove your pet chicken from his fenced run without leaving a trace. Cheap chicken wire across the top will glint in the sun and keep these predators at bay.
Don’t use chicken wire for the sides of your cage. Even a medium size dog can tear through it. Use a heavier gauge wire mesh for the sides.
Profit from Your Pet Chickens
If you have the space you can start a fun home business keeping chickens. You don’t have to have a large flock to sell a few eggs. And if you go organic or free range them, the eggs will be worth more money. People will drive to you for fresh eggs, or you may find a local outdoor market that you can take them to.
Another way to make money with your pet chickens is to start out with a rare breed pair and sell the baby chicks. There are several hatcheries that carry rare and endangered breed chickens to get you started. Some of these are very old breeds that went out of vogue and became part of a dwindling supply; others are newer mutations of some standard breeds.
As your chickens loose their feathers you can clean them and use them for crafts to sell. Crafters use feathers for floral décor, as part of dream catchers, purses, hats, and other accessories. With the variety of color, patterns, length, and texture in chicken feathers a good crafter is limited only by their imagination.

Keeping Chickens – 6 Points You Need to Consider
Are you excited about the possibility of keeping chickens on your own farm or in your own backyard? This is indeed a fun, healthy and smart choice. Before you get started, there are a few basics you should know about raising pet chickens and the legality of keeping chickens.
1. Chicken and the Law
First, make sure that you are in cooperation with all city ordinances. Many cities have rules on how many chickens you are allowed to keep as “pets” in a chicken coop. Some rules state that hens are allowed but roosters are not.
2. Building Chicken Coops
Long before buying your first chicks, make plans to build (or buy) a chicken coop and possibly a larger chicken run area. Proper chicken coop design will protect your chickens from weather, outdoor predators and from, of course, flying the coop. Put some serious thought into location; many people cannot stomach the idea of a chicken coop (with accompanying smells) so close to the home.
3. Now Hiring Chicken Cleaners
Don’t underestimate the mess on your hands-literally. Decide in advance if you have the time and energy to clean up after your chicken coop or if you are going to pay someone else to take care of it. Many people find that they are unable to deal with the smell or the demanding activity that chicken coop cleaning requires.
4. Prepare Yourself for Chicken-Death
It’s inevitable that you’re going to have to toughen up and hack some chickens if you have a coop, and this is regardless of whether you plan to eat your chicken population. For example, if your chicken becomes sick it’s not practical to take it to a “vet.” The only solution is chicken death. (Don’t look, Chicken Little!) You might also have to contend with chickens that died of natural causes, chickens that escape and chickens that are murdered by predators.
5. Planned Chicken Parenthood
Determine in advance how many chickens you plan on raising. This really depends on how much room you have to spare. The minimum yardage for a chicken coop is 1-4 square feet per bird; for a large coop. You may need as much as 50-100 square feet for a chicken coop and chicken run. How many chickens do you need to start out with? If you just want fresh eggs (feeding about four people) then six good “layers” is workable. However, egg production does decrease at certain times of the year, especially in winter seasons. Late summer and early autumn might also cause problems in raising chickens.
6. Buying Your First Chickens
You can start small if your budget is limited. Remember to consider your capital as well as your time investment. Remember, chickens do not produce eggs on cue. There may be a waiting period and you have to plan for that. Some people find it advantageous to buy day-old chickens because they are cheap. However, these little birds have a higher likelihood of death. They are also high maintenance and sometimes require foster mothers or artificial brooders. Last but not least, remember that when chicks are young, they cannot be easily sexed. Therefore, you may end up with more roosters than layers, which is not practical for your great egg plan.
Keeping chickens in a chicken coop is a lot of fun, green-friendly and will produce better eggs than you will find in the supermarket.

Why you should keep chickens as pets
There are so many reasons why chickens make fantastic pets for adults and children alike. No other pet can compare really. How often does your cat lay you an egg and express such excitement at the event that all its friends begin to join in as a mass party begins to tell the world? Does your dog act like a mother hen, clucking its way around the garden, pecking at the worms with a skittish and hilarious attitude? Not many people realize, but chickens are actually extremely funny to observe and have lovely little personalities. Not only this, they are often happy to shake off the common myth that they are not a ‘cuddly pet’ by enjoying being picked up and gently stroked by any human who will give them the attention.
Sadly, the majority of hens on this planet do not get the opportunity to express this natural playful behaviour, as they are mostly forced to live in large industrial battery farms where they are simply a money making machine and just a number in the billions of chickens which are born, stuffed into a cage and die on the slaughter line every year at the end of their egg laying peak. These innocent creatures do not deserve to be treated in this way, forced to live in an area the size of an A4 sheet of paper along with other hens so tightly packed that they cannot lay down, walk or even move around.
The floor these poor battery hens are forced to stand on are simply barbaric. A wire mesh, no dust to bathe in as chickens love to do, no soft straw to lay on. Often their feet are severely damaged by the mesh they have to stand on for their entire lives.
Imagine for a moment spending your entire life like that? It doesn’t bear thinking about. You may think, well these are just chickens, they don’t have feelings, but you’d be wrong. Why should any living feeling creature be forced to endure this pain every day of their lives? Why would anyone want them to? This is where keeping pet chickens comes into it. The more people keep chickens as pets, the less they will have to be kept in these awful conditions. You may think one family keeping chickens will not make any difference, but you’d be surprised. Just one family with 4 chickens showing their friends their little flock can inspire all their friends and their friends in turn. People who never before would have considered keeping chickens as pets suddenly open up to a whole new world of pet chicken mania!
There is a revolution currently going on in the chicken world, all over the globe hundreds of people are acquiring pet chickens on a daily basis. This is fantastic news. Not only does this ease the demand for factory farms to produce eggs in such a grotesque way, it also provides families with good, fresh eggs for the cost of a bag of corn once a month (a lot less than you spend on eggs!) The eggs are not only 30-40 days fresher than their factory farmed counterparts, they are also organic and antibiotic free. You would be amazed at just what goes into a factory farmed egg and how different a home grown egg tastes which was laid this morning! The yolk is a much deeper orange and the taste is so much better. Find a friend with chickens and ask to try a freshly laid egg for yourself!
If you find yourself considering keeping chickens as pets, you could go a step further and rescue some ex battery hens. At the end of their first year, battery chickens are deemed ‘uneconomical’ to keep any longer as their egg production rate drops below a ‘guaranteed’ 1 a day. They are then torn out of their prison cells (often by their legs, it’s not very nice), and throw into crates to go into a huge truck before being delivered to the slaughter house. These poor dilapidated birds are usually very bruised and featherless and as a result are more often than not used in reformed and processed chicken products such as chicken nuggets, baby food, soups and meat pies. In this way the bruised flesh is easily disguised. What a sad state for any creature to live and die in, 100% exploited from beginning to end.
In the UK there are a few kind individuals who are trying their best to save as many ex battery chickens as possible, although there are only a very limited amount they can save. There is a serious need for charities like these to be established in the US. Although there is one charity which does work such as this in the USA, many more are needed. Ex battery chickens are actually still usually capable of laying a decent supply of eggs and make fantastic pets. It’s an extremely rewarding experience seeing them go from bald and weak ‘oven readies’ to beautiful healthy and friendly birds.
Keeping chickens is so important in this day and age, where factory farming must be reduced as much as possible. The pain and suffering which goes on due to these processes is immeasurable, not to mention the impact on the environment. Why not consider keeping your own pet chickens? It’s great fun and the eggs taste great too!
Sally Harwood runs http://www.pet-chicken-coops.com/ which lists the various places you are able to purchase both chicken coops and blueprints for building your own coops throughout the UK and USA. She is striving to encourage the keeping of pet chickens by ordinary families in a bid to reduce the number of battery chickens exploited every year by the egg industry. She also actively promotes battery hen rescue charities through her site.
